According to Forbes, “In August 2018, the teen climate activist started skipping school to protest climate change inaction outside of the Swedish Parliament.” She quickly attracted mass media attention for protesting outside the Swedish Parliament.

“Once we start to act, hope is everywhere. So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come.”

Reports state that in the year 2019, “some four million people across the globe participated in the largest climate change demonstration in history, led by Thunberg.” She managed to gain a lot of attention for her blunt manner of speaking, irrespective of her public speaking or while she was in assemblies with political leaders.

When she was just eight years old, Greta Thunberg heard about the problems related to the climate change crisis. However, she could not understand why the world leaders were doing so little about this major problem.

“We are living in the beginning of a mass extinction and our climate is breaking down.”

At the age of eleven, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Asperger Syndrome, and selective mutism. These disorders made it almost impossible for her to not take any active steps for the climate crisis.

Connecting the dots between her conditions and the factors leading her to become an activist, Greta mentioned in her TEDx Talk (November 2018), “I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, OCD and selective mutism. That basically means I only speak when I think it’s necessary. Now is one of those moments.”

In 2018, Greta won an essay competition on climate change that was held by Svenska Dagbladet, a Swedish newspaper. One of the major points that made her win the competition was when she wrote, “I want to feel safe. How can I feel safe when I know we are in the greatest crisis in human history?”

She was seen outside the Swedish Parliament, the Riksdag, with almost more than half of her frame covered with a handmade cardboard sign that read “Skolstrejk för klimatet,” which translates to “School strike for climate.” This became the representative image that defined Greta’s personality and aims.

While Greta continues to be in the headlines for her protests and activism, she gathered attention from all over the world very recently again. On 17 January 2023, Greta Thunberg was detained by the German police at a mine protest.

She was protesting against the demolition of the village of Lützerath that was done to make way for expanding a coal mine in Germany. The protests began after the German government ordered the clearing away of a village in North Rhine-Westphalia in order to expand the RWE-owned coal mine.

“We can no longer save the world by playing by the rules.”

One of the main reasons for the protests, according to the BBC, is the fact that it undermines the efforts and promises of the German Government for a better future. “The government has pledged to bring forward the phase-out of coal in North Rhine-Westphalia, the state in which the mine lies, to 2030. The national target is 2038,” the report states.

According to reports, nearly six thousand protesters gathered to fight for the cause as they are of the opinion that this decision by the government undermines “Germany’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Greta was detained and carried by three police officers near the Garzweiler 2 mine, which is located nearly 9 km (5.6 miles) from the village of Lützerath. However, the police later confirmed that they had only briefly detained Greta and not arrested her. She was released after a moment and an ID check.

A spokesperson for the Aachen Police stated, “Greta Thunberg was part of a group of activists who rushed towards the ledge. However, she was then stopped and carried by us with this group out of the immediate danger area to establish their identity.”

Greta later also clarified through her tweet that they were not arrested but simple detained momentarily:
